Professional Development Roundtable (Breakfast Gatherings)

On the 2nd Saturday of every month at 8 am, join Alumni and friends of the Citadel for the Business and Professional Development Roundtable, an adjunct activity of CCGW.  The meetings are held at the Holiday Inn on Eisenhower Avenue in Alexandria.  (Yes, we do have a map!)  The dress is comfortable-casual, and the cost is $15.00 at the door, which pays for an all-you-care-to-eat buffet and for our use of the room. 14 Jun 08 - BRIGADIER GENERAL ERIC W. VOLLMECKE, CLASS OF 1982

 

Brig Gen Eric W. Vollmecke is the Chief of Staff of the West Virginia Air National Guard (WVANG) with responsibility for the 130th Airlift Wing in Charleston, WV and the 167th Airlift Wing in Martinsburg, WV.  Additionally, he supervises the State Command Staff and advises the Adjutant General on matters relating to the Air National Guard. 

 

General Vollmecke earned a bachelor’s degree in mathematics from The Citadel and was commissioned as a second lieutenant in 1982 as a communications/computer officer and later served on the Air Staff leading system development initiatives on the Worldwide Military Command and Control System.  In 1987, he joined the WVANG and was selected to attend pilot training.  Since then, he has risen from C130 mission pilot through flight commander, squadron commander, and wing commander to his present position as Chief of Staff of the WVANG.   

 

Highlights of his career include a reserve officer exchange tour, during which he flew operational missions with the Royal Air Force in Africa.  He led the Wing to a second place finish in the airdrop competition during the International Airlift Rodeo in 1998.  As a mission pilot, he flew combat sorties in Desert Shield/Storm, Drug Wars, Bosnia and Kosovo.  After 11 September 2001, he led the 167th Air Squadron on deployments from Germany and Qatar in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.  During Operation Iraqi Freedom, he served as the Chief of Staff for the Director of Mobility Forces for US Central Command. 

 

As Commander, 167th Air Wing, he led the unit to an overall “Excellent” rating on its operational readiness inspection and ensured the combat readiness and effectiveness of the unit’s troops deployed in support of the War on Terrorism.    He oversaw the Wing’s transition from tactical airlift (C130s) to strategic airlift (C5s).   From May through September 2005, he commanded the 451st Air Expeditionary Group at Kandahar AB, Afghanistan where he was responsible for Predator Operations, Air Battle Space Control, Tactical Air Control Parties, Combat Search & Rescue, Medical Evacuation, and Air Mobility Operations.   

 

In his civilian career, he joined Lockheed Martin in 1990 as a senior systems engineer, progressed through senior staff and managerial positions, and won Lockheed Martin’s top award for teamwork, “The NOVA Award,” and subsequently the company’s “President’s Award.”  In 1998, he joined the South Carolina Research Authority as the Director of New Programs, where he has designed and overseen research into strategic level disciplines, including defense, homeland security, and medical technology.

 

General Vollmecke is a command pilot with over 4,000 flying hours and 140 combat sorties. He is also a former member of the Pentagon’s Triathlon Team and participated in the first Himalayan Expedition to reach the summit of Mount Chulo in Nepal.

They will also be stopping off in Richmod to visit and perform for 2LT Russ Kaufmann and the other wounded and sick veterans at the Richmond VA Hospital. Full schedule to follow.

 

20 Mar 08 - The Citadel 2008 Corps Day Muster - The Citadel Club of Greater Washington will hold its corps day muster on Thursday, March 20th 2008 at the Army Navy Country Club in the Fort Richardson Room from 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm. The purpose of the Corps Day Muster is to celebrate the founding of The Citadel 166 years ago and to honor all Citadel Alumni who past on in the last year. The keynote speaker will be Brigadier General Richard Lake, USMC, Citadel Class of 1977, the former Professor Of Naval Science at The Citadel and currently assigned to Headquarters, Marine Corps. Active Duty and Reserve military personnel are requested to wear uniform: Army, and Air Force – Class A; Marine Corps – Dress Blue – Bravo; Navy and Coast Guard – Service Blue. Civilian: business attire (coat and tie). The Citadel is inviting sixty potential academic scholarship awardees for the Class of 2012 and their parents from VA, MD, DE, and PA - so substantial alumni attendance is important in demonstrating our enduring loyalty to The Citadel. Bring your spouse or a friend to this moving ceremony and share comradeship with a classmate. We expect a heavy turnout.
