CCGW History

The Citadel Club of Greater Washington was formed/founded in the late 60s by Bernard T (Bernie) Renzy '59 as a social outlet and to bring metropolitan DC area alumni together to foster the brotherhood of alumni, to bring alumni closer to their alma mater and to support our alma mater in any way feasible and possible.

Records available in Alumni office begin with the Feb 1970 newsletter making mention of the then club officers and the fact that The Citadel would have a team on the GE College Bowl. Dues were three dollars and mailings went out to approximately 300 alumni including some 50 dues paying active members. Now mailings go to over 700 addresses spanning Montgomery, Prince Georges and Anne Arundal Counties in MD; Fairfax, Arlington, Prince William and Stafford Counties in VA; Alexandria, Falls Church, Manassas, and Vienna cities in VA and of course, the nation's capital city, Washington.

With automation becoming more prevalent in the 70s, the club through talents of Bob Kirchhoff '57, automated the club's address list using a master list from Association of Citadel Men data base.  This effort spawned a terrific growth in the number of alumni who were included in mailings and activities.   The CCGW now boasts a repository of over 800 area alumni to include addresses, phone numbers, e-mail addresses, class, and job-related information.

One of the more auspicious events in the early life of the Washington Club occurred with the send off to Charleston of LGen George M Seignious III '42 prior to his becoming our 14th President. At that event, Corps Day 1974, some 276 alumni, spouses/girl friends honored one of our own at the Bolling AFB 'O' Club.

In 1998, The Citadel Club of Greater Washington became a non-profit organization in accordance with IRC 501(c)(3) and is exercised the rights and privelages there of.
